WILL HENRY:
Surface Tension

Hiram Butler Gallery

August 4- 28 September 28,2018
Reception for the artist: Aug. 25 11am-1pm

Will Henry is a young, up and coming Houston visionary artist.
About his paintings in his own words:
“The paintings have a strong sense of narrative and the landscape functions almost as a backdrop to the drama that unfolds. Growing up in a rural area the landscape really imprinted on my psyche and noticing a sense of sparseness of melancholy or loneliness”

“It is the quiet moments that are really not noticed by many. I rarely work from source imagery and I’m not so concerned with creating something in its exact place.”

MAXIM WAKULTSCHIK:
One Thousand and One

Anya Tish Gallery
Opens September 7, 2018 through October 6, 2018
Opening Reception: Fiday, Sept. 7 6pm – 8:30pm
The Artist will be present

Internationally recognized, Germany based neo-pop artist, Maxim Wakultschik returns to Houston for his fifth solo-exhibition, One Thousand and One.

Utilizing thousands of hand-painted wooden sticks, Wakultschik creates a cutting edge, kinetic take on portraiture and introduces a new series of work depicting densely patterned carpets.

This exhibition will question your perception and wonder about the connections between a Persian inspired carpet and the confrontational gaze of Maxim’s portraits.

Wakultschik, born in Byelorussia in 1973, currently lives and works in Dusseldorf, Germany where he studied at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. It was here that he learned under the guidance of such recognized artists as Beate Schiff and Jannis Kounellis, honing his practice in creating methodically precise and accurate constructions that create formal order from the chaos of independent elements.

Wakultschik continues to explore his captivating perspective on contemporary portraiture in cutting edge work selected for this exhibition through a unique combination of sculpture, painting, and objects that employ nontraditional materials. Each pop art like portrait is created out of thousands of hand painted wooden sticks meticulously placed to form multicolor images. In One Thousand and One, the artist expands his practice beyond portraiture, this time in the form of wall-dependent constructions inspired by Persian carpets.

Both the portraits and the carpets have a recurrent feature: they compel the viewer to an in-depth examination of the object from all angles. The slightest movement or the smallest alteration in perspective deliver stunning new impressions, turning the work into a kinetic object.

Maxim Wakultschik has had numerous exhibitions in both museums and galleries worldwide, among them the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, Taiwan, Center for Contemporary Art, Moscow, Russia, Kuntshaus Mettmann, Germany, Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum, Hagen, Germany, and the Museum NRW-Forum, Düsseldorf, Germany. His artwork has been featured in art fairs such as Scope Miami, Scope Art Basel, the Houston Fine Art Fair, Contemporary Istanbul, Art Stage Singapore, ART TAIPEI and Art Fair 21 Cologne. He has been the recipient of several awards including the Kubo Art award, Herne, Germany, the Emprice Art Award, Düsseldorf, Germany, the Special Prize for Originality, Wesseling, Germany and the Union Competition Diploma, Moscow, Russia. His work is in several private and corporate collections, among them, Hewlett Packard, Germany, Booz-Allen Hamilton, Frankfurt, Germany, Fast Trade AG, Cologne, Germany, AXA, Kohn, Germany, and Arsenal Municipal Gallery, Poznan, Poland.

ANDREA BIANCONI:
Breakthrough

Barbara Davis Gallery
Opens September 7, 2018 through October 6, 2018
Opening Reception: Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 6pm – 8:30pm
ULTRA: Performance by the artist 7:30pm

Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce Breakthrough, a solo exhibition opening Friday, September the 7th, with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:30 pm and a performance by the artist at 7:30pm.

“The exhibition Breakthrough is my inspiration, and what is behind it, is my constant desire for discovery. Breakthrough is outside of us and within us. The exhibition includes drawings, paintings, sculpture, installation and performance.

There is always an idea of travel in my work. Everything has a direction, when we talk, we listen, we eat, we think and when we breathe. The arrow is universal. Even the sunrise, a wandering leaf that falls and a growing flower all have a direction. The arrow is universal; it is everywhere.”
Andrea Bianconi

Andrea Bianconi (Arzignano, 1974) lives and works in Italy and New York. Among his numerous achievements, Bianconi was selected to participate in the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art curated by Catherine de Zegher, former Director of the New York Drawing Center and current Director of the MSK Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium. In 2013, Bianconi launched his publication Fable at MoMA PS1, which was purchased by the MoMA Library. He was the only artist invited to participate at the 2018 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Bianconi will soon be given a solo exhibition at Villa Panza in Varese, Italy, which hosts one of the foremost collections of contemporary American art, as well as top international exhibitions.
