BIOTOPE:
Petra Nováková Ondreičková
Cindy Lisica Gallery

September 7 – October 6, 2018

Cindy Lisica Gallery is pleased to host Petra Nováková Ondreičková’s captivating and boundary-crossing exhibition, Biotope. Much like a habitat provides a living place for a population, a biotope hosts a specific assemblage of plants and animals. The artist makes reference to each artwork becoming its own metaphorical community. The relationship with other objects and the room itself serves to add a further dimension to each piece. Petra’s methods and studio process also consider the concepts of time and serendipity, and often her previously shown materials transform into new pieces after they become “mentally outlived”, reappearing as new ideas and forms. Her work goes beyond the traditional scope of drawing and painting and creates 3-dimensional collages the artist refers to as “knife drawings” or “spatial images”. The act of cutting into the materials constitutes a decision. It creates openings and also shapes the material that remains after each intervention. The artwork eliminates perceived hierarchies between negative and positive space by utilizing light and shadow as well as the physicality of the object. Each piece entices the viewer to ponder the created environment.

About the Artist:
Petra Nováková Ondreičková (b. 1968, Bratislava, Slovakia) holds degrees in architecture, design, and sculpture at the Academy of Applied Art, Nottingham Trent University, and the Cité des Arts in Paris. LORENA MORALES:
Color in Present Time

Hooks-Epstein Galleries
September 8 Through October 13, 2018
Opening Reception Sept. 8, 2018 –  6:30-8:00pm

Hooks-Epstein Galleries is proud to present Color in Present Time, an exhibition of mixed media works by Lorena Morales. Lorena Morales’ Color in Present Time relates to the journey of finding her way home. A native of Venezuela, Morales moved to the USA in 2003. Since immigrating, her perception of home has evolved along with her new, mixed cultural identity. Recollections of familiar sounds, everyday scents, and reoccurring images from both, her birth home and adoptive home, interweave within her mind. Through the interplay of vivid colors and geometric shapes with shifting light and shadows, Morales’ works propose an abstract visual passage that signifies the intersection of her memories, emotions, and expectations. Lorena Morales studied painting and sculpture at The Glassell School of Art in Houston, TX. In 2016, she completed a site-specific installation for Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center’s permanent collection. In 2015, Morales was invited to participate in SITE Houston—an exhibition transforming the honeycombed footprint of thirty-four renovated grain silos into a site-specific contemporary art installation. In 2011, she was invited by The Glassell School of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Carlos Cruz-Diez Foundation, of Paris, France, to participate in a seminar in Contemporary Art at Glassell. Morales currently lives in Houston.

BAYOU CITY ART FESTIVAL DOWNTOWN
2018 featured artist is Chris Vance

Saturday, October 13 & Sunday, October 14, 2018
10:00am – 6:00pm

The Art Colony Association, Inc. (ACA) has announced that the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown 2018 featured artist is Chris Vance, a Mixed Media 2D artist from Bondurant, IA. Vance along with 300 artists from around the world representing 19 different disciplines will showcase their art at Bayou City Art Festival Downtown, benefiting non-profits.

Vance is fueled by daily experiences, emotions, and ideas to transform a blank canvas into an expression of himself. Art is his medium of expression and Vance refers to art as his diary. Each piece represents a specific moment or experience in his life. He allows his feelings to drive the piece on a subconscious level. The canvas guides his decisions in forms of line and color as he is painting.

Exclusively for Bayou City Art Festival, Vance unveiled a new piece inspired by Houston that will be the featured artwork for the 2018 Downtown festival. The colorful piece titled “All Spaced Out” showcases Houston’s vibrant atmosphere and diverse communities. Vance was influenced by the fun and inclusive city that is Houston. The featured artwork is inspired by graffiti, cartoons, the skateboarding culture, and trains. Vance combined his signature style and Downtown Houston’s ambience to create a meaningful and fun piece.

Celebrating 47 years since the founding of the Westheimer Art Festival, now known as Bayou City Art Festival, ACA has provided a venue for over 20,000 artists to showcase their work to thousands of art lovers from all over the world. Every year, a new jury selects participating artists, some new and some returning. This helps create a fresh and unique festival year after year.
