Beautiful Homes Are Distinctly Personal

Ten years in Houston, a growing focus on new construction, and a belief that the most beautiful homes are the ones that feel distinctly personal.
For the past ten years, Jessicah Kolter Interior Design has been creating thoughtful, elevated interiors in Houston. What began with residential renovations has evolved into a larger scale project, with a primary focus on custom new-build homes. This has given the firm the opportunity to be involved in the design process from the very beginning. Which means from the start of the creative drawings process to selecting every finish, designing all the cabinetry details, to furnishing the home.
With over 20 years on Interior Design experience and a background spanning residential design and commercial architecture, Jessicah Kolter approaches each home as a whole—considering everything from space planning and architectural details to finishes, lighting, and millwork. The goal is not simply to create beautiful rooms, but to create a home where every element works together.

BEYOND THE BASICS

New construction gives us the opportunity to think about design from the very beginning. Every decision contributes to a larger vision, allowing the architecture, materials, and details to feel cohesive while still giving each home its own personality.
Texture is one of our favorite ways to create that sense of depth. A stone with movement, a plaster finish, or beautifully detailed millwork can make a space feel layered without overwhelming it. We love adding reeded wood details in unexpected areas such as a vent hood, back of cabinetry, or a feature all of a room. And when the right material comes along, we love letting it be the moment. Beautiful stone can feel almost like artwork when its natural movement is allowed to take center stage. This is a lovely way in which we choose to integrate the colors of our walls, cabinetry, tile, and flooring, making for a harmonious interior.

Currently we are drawn to warm neutrals—soft, earthy tones that create a timeless foundation while allowing architecture and distinctive materials to stand out. When choosing paint or cabinetry colors, we’re looking for something to add depth, not a plain white. Neutral paint colors with undertones of cream or taupe will add richness to your home in an effortless way. And when it comes to cabinetry color selections, be bold in areas like a Study or Powder room. This is a great way to try a dark or deep saturated hue without tiring of it. Warm gold and brown wood tones on flooring and cabinetry add instant rich look and feel. We love white oak for both, which has texture and a variation of colors that are easy to maintain for busy lifestyles. Opt for a wide plank when selecting flooring, as this will inherently make your room feel larger.
In bathrooms, we are moving away from standard builder-grade details in favor of elements that feel more intentional: framed mirrors with decorative side sconces, stone-lined shower niches that coordinate with the countertops, and thoughtfully designed shower benches. These details may be small, but they have a significant impact on how a space feels. Mix your tiles selections up, go for different scales. So many times, we see people selecting all one tile in a bathroom, and that can feel stark and sterile. We suggest installing a large-scale tile on main flooring, a small mosaic tile on shower floor, and a mid-size subway on shower walls, but placed in an interesting and eye-catching pattern.

After ten years in Houston and a rapidly evolving new construction market, our approach continues to be rooted in thoughtful design, collaboration, and attention to detail.
We believe the most successful homes aren’t defined by following every trend. They are created by understanding how a client wants to live and translating that into a cohesive design with personality, warmth, and lasting appeal.
That is what makes new construction so exciting to us—the opportunity to bring all of those decisions together from the start and create a home that feels uniquely its own.
