Paths of Life: Bogdan Mihai Returns to Argentina with a Provocative New Series
This August, the Bienal Internacional de Fotografía Artística Fronteras Foto Fest 2025 in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, will welcome back an artist whose unique voice continues to captivate audiences across the globe. Romanian-born fine art photographer, videographer, and painter Bogdan Mihai returns to the celebrated international photography festival with a brand-new collection entitled Paths of Life—a body of work that promises to provoke thought as much as it dazzles the eye.
Though this marks Mihai’s fourth appearance at Fronteras Foto Fest, it is his most intimate and experimental exhibition yet. “I wanted to explore how we are not separate from nature but an extension of it,” says Mihai. “The veins of a leaf, the cracks in a stone—they’re not unlike our own arteries and bones. There’s a kind of universal pattern beneath it all.”
The photographs are deeply colorful, yet ghostly. In one image, crimson roots curl like arteries across a muted background of cracked earth. In another, a cluster of stones is rendered with glowing edges, resembling vertebrae on a luminous scan. The abstraction invites the viewer into a layered experience: at first, a visual feast, and then a deeper psychological exploration. The works toe the line between organic beauty and subtle unease.
This duality—beauty paired with message—is characteristic of Mihai’s practice. His last appearance at the festival featured Nature Remembered, a series of photographs that centered plaster statues of animals surrounded by doily patterns. This project was an homage to his grandmother’s home, where meaningful objects were always placed atop hand-woven lace. That nostalgic element—combined with a dark undertone—spoke volumes.
“The idea was simple: If we don’t protect nature, all that may remain are these static imitations,” Mihai explains. “We’ll have only memories, or worse—decorations—of what once lived.”
The images in Nature Remembered are elegant, even whimsical, but carry a melancholic warning. A marble deer with fading paint stands solemnly atop a bright crocheted circle. A ceramic bird seems to mourn its own artificiality. Humor runs throughout, but it’s the kind of humor that underscores loss and fragility.
This capacity to fuse conceptual depth with visual elegance is part of what makes Mihai’s work so resonant. In 2021, he exhibited Inheritance, a photographic exploration of a crumbling health spa in Herculane, Romania. That series juxtaposed architectural decay with questions of heritage and societal responsibility. Do we pass along ruins or legacies? Are we stewards or spectators? The richly toned, highly composed images of cracked plaster and collapsing corridors created an emotional response that transcended language.
Mihai’s artistic voice did not emerge in isolation. His career began in the world of media—working in radio and television production—where he honed his instincts for narrative structure and emotional pacing. His first major photographic series in 2005 chronicled his personal experience surviving the devastating tsunami in Sri Lanka. That series, journalistic in nature, marked a pivotal moment in his creative life.
“That was when I understood that photography could be more than documentation,” Mihai recalls. “It could be a way to process experience, to shape memory, and to build emotional bridges.”
Since that turning point, Mihai has approached each series with a story-first philosophy. Whether it’s the story of a dying forest, an abandoned building, or the invisible connections between human tissue and tree bark, the camera is his means of storytelling—a continuation of the reporter’s role, now through metaphor and fine art rather than footage and facts.
His global journey has also shaped his artistic lens. Mihai has lived in Romania, the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States. These varied environments have all influenced his aesthetic choices. He currently lives and works in Houston, Texas, where the intersection of nature and urbanism continues to inspire his photography.
Despite this international lifestyle, his work always seems to return to something deeply personal. There is often a whisper of his Romanian roots—be it through motifs like lace or ruins, or through cultural echoes in texture and tone. His art is not nostalgic, but reverent; it doesn’t idealize the past, but acknowledges its influence on the present.
Mihai’s participation in Fronteras Foto Fest 2025 is not only a return to a familiar venue but a presentation of an entirely new vision. Paths of Life represents a turning point—an introspective dive into biology, myth, and material form. At a time when the world grapples with its place in nature and the threats posed to both ecological and bodily systems, Mihai’s images strike a chord.
“We’re at a point where the environment, our bodies, and our societies are all in flux,” Mihai says. “Art can’t solve it, but it can help us reflect. It can offer a mirror—and maybe even a map.”
