Winning the World Cup
Whether it is the beer-guzzling Irish in Boston or the Croats in Dallas, or maybe the wealthy African nations proudly represented by 10 teams, the story lines have been plentiful. The US has shown up big in the sports arena with its long-awaited hosting of World Cup Soccer. Not since 1994 has this largest tournament been hosted by Americans. Houston’s inaugural turn as one of the host cities as expected has elevated it worldwide, showcasing its immense diversity and welcoming atmosphere. Little did anyone know that Buc-ee’s would be a thing for the foreigners, along with the simplest, tasteless Ranch dressing.
Hosting the World Cup has been monumental for the sport of soccer and the three countries, US, Mexico and Canada cohosting it. To host the World Cup became a significant decision due to infrastructure and demands of so many more matches.The FIFA expansion to 48 teams and 104 total matches led them to pick the US, Canada and Mexico as cohosts due to the many facilities required.
Is it a fact that America has possibly finally fallen in love with soccer? It appears so from the size of the crowds for the games and the enthusiasm by the younger generation.
Hard to believe some cities such as Chicago and Minneapolis passed on the opportunity to host and welcome millions of fans and tourists who may fall in love with your city. Certainly seems to be the case in Houston.
Fans and media outlets have praised the United States for its world-class stadiums, transportation infrastructure, and ability to stage major sporting events on a grand scale. Cities such as Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, and New York have become focal points of global attention, showcasing American culture alongside the world’s most popular sport.
On June 14, 2026 FIFA World Cup Houston hosted its first ever men’s World Cup games at NRG Stadium with seven tournament matches, with the final game concluding on July 4, 2026, between Canada and Morocco. Despite its inaugural showing, Houston has been lauded as a prime Super Bowl destination for American football for years. It’s certainly not Houston’s first rodeo as a host for a large event and will likely encourage more of the same. In its first ever game, Germany won a 7-1 victory over Curaçao in front of 68,021 fans. Despite something of a David-and-Goliath match that didn’t materialize for Curaçao, the host city and country showed up big.
